Fixer Upper Inspired Farmhouse Centerpiece

I am excited because my latest project was inspired by one of my favorite television programs...Fixer Upper! I love seeing Chip and Joanna Gaines transform homes into wonderful architectural and decorating masterpieces for their clients! So when I saw this project on Joanna's blog At Home, I knew that I had to try my hand at it while giving it my own personal twist!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Fixer Upper Inspired Farmhouse Centerpiece succulentsMy first challenge was to learn how to care for succulents. Yes, I know...not a big deal for some of you but I am a heavy-handed waterer! lol I found this nice selection of twenty small succulents on Joss & Main. (They are not paying me to say that...I just like them.) Then I waited a few weeks until I was sure that I hadn't killed them. I have to say that after losing three, I discovered a secret that I will share...water with a spray bottle! Yep...it really works! No more dead succulents!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Fixer Upper Inspired Farmhouse Centerpiece suppliesOnce I was comfortable with caring for the succulents, I started creating my centerpiece. Joanna's version featured terra cotta pots but I wanted to use my favorite galvanized container for a farmhouse touch. However, you could always substitute terra cotta if you prefer.

Here's what you will need:
  • Selection of small succulents
  • Galvanized container that is approximately 12 inches wide
  • Clean tin can with the label removed that is as tall as your container and will fit the width of a pillar candle
  • Pillar candle
  • Cactus or succulent potting soil
  • Small bag of pebbles
CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Fixer Upper Inspired Farmhouse Centerpiece tutorialHere's what you will do:
  1. Place the tin can in the center of the larger container and fill it half-way with pebbles.
  2. Fill the outer ring of the container with potting soil about 3/4 of the way up. Remove the succulents from their pots and arrange them in the larger container. Carefully add enough soil to cover them to the top of their soil line.
  3. Add the pebbles in a pattern that pleases you.
  4. Place the pillar candle inside the tin can, adding more pebbles if you need to so that the candle rises to the height that you desire.

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Fixer Upper Inspired Farmhouse CenterpieceI am loving the look of the succulents and can't wait to see them grow!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Fixer Upper Inspired Farmhouse CenterpieceAnd...taaaa daaaa!...here it is! It is happily residing on my patio for the time being, under the shade of my patio umbrella. I love lighting the candle and enjoying the evenings in the cooler night air. When cold weather (finally) gets here, it will come inside.

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Mini Herb Garden with DIY Chalkboard Plant MarkersIf the container looks familiar, it spent most of the summer as my MINI HERB GARDEN WITH CHALKBOARD PLANT MARKERS. I enjoyed harvesting the fresh herbs, especially mint for my iced tea, but it had seen better days and it was time to repurpose it.

FINDING FRENCH FARMHOUSE STYLE…AT A FARM SUPPLY STORE. Yep...you read that right! I love adding little farmhouse touches around the house and I especially love being able to do that without spending a lot of money! :-) And as Martha says, that’s a good thing!

Great Fixer Upper inspired farmhouse centerpiece, dear friend!
Love the idea of placing rock in the bottom of the can before inserting the candle!

  5. I totally love all this post. I've been so sick for weeks now so I've saved just a few blogs to save to read. I'm glad to see DIY included. I live where one would think all succulents would thrive- a desert, .... But no. Not all do well. So just losing three is pretty good in my eyes!! I have one I cut off and shove in a pot to make a tree for a mini garden but in the little pot from my grandson, everything dies. Good thing I can continually cut new!! I do think I will use a spray bottle to mist his. For my ones that do grow overtake a spot and tumble down a 16" tall pot. I just love the galvanized bucket idea. Something in the middle and succulents around!!! I'm amazed it took 20 that's where I get in trouble!!! I don't realize how many more a large circle takes. But thank you for the idea, the tips, and yes I do use the cactus soil or if I'm out I add beach sand to the regular soil. I never go into our tractor supply store now that I don't drive. It's just three stop lights away!! I'll ask for a ride!! Have a nice day!

  6. Thanks for your advice on succulents. I too love them but I have had a problem keeping them alive. I like your idea of using a spray bottle to water, I tend to over water too. I do not have a green thumb but love in door plants. I thought succulents would be my answer but they do take trial and error.
